FAQ: What is the 'Digital Scientific Keys' file for?

Question

What is the 'Digital Scientific Keys' file for? Where do I get the file from, and how do I install it?

Answer

SmartCapture (and other applications from Digital Scientific) are protected from unuthorised copying by a security system that uses a 'dongle' or hardware security key (see the FAQ Cannot Locate Correct Key) and a software key (A file called 'Digital Scientific Keys').

The software key is used by the application to determine what (if any) features of the application are permitted to run with the connected dongle.

Digital Scientific keeps an up-to-date software key on it's web site. If you require a new software key, using an Internet browser, you can download the software key from our "Goodies" web page.

If you are downloading the software key onto a Macintosh computer you should get a file called 'Digital Scientific Keys' and it should have an icon which is picture of a key.

To install the software key, you need to drag it into the folder that contains the SmartCapture application, replacing any software key file that may already exist.

Once the software key is installed (and assuming that the dongle is connected) the application should run correctly.

If you are downloading the software key on to a PC, you will need to ensure that the options are set for your browser to NOT automatically unpack '.hqx' files. A correct download should result in a file called 'Digital Scientific Keys.hqx' being created on your PC. Transfer this file to the Mac by a network connection, removable disk or any other means. On the Mac use 'StuffIt Expander™' to unpack the 'Digital Scientific Keys.hqx' into the 'Digital Scientific Keys' file. Place the software key into the application folder as above.
