FAQ: Cannot Locate Correct Key...

Question

Why do I get the message 'Cannot locate correct key. Ensure correct key is attached. Restart Mac after key has been connected.' Even though my security key is connected?

Answer

There are two types of security key or dongle. There is the original ADB (Apple Desktop Bus) key and there is the new USB (Universal Serial Bus) key. The ADB key is grey and lozenge shaped. The USB key is flat and purple. On newer Macs that are equipped with a USB port it is possible to connect the older style ADB key using a USB to ADB converter such as the iMate.

The SmartCapture installer will install a file called 'USBSentinel' if the installer is run on a Mac with USB ports. Earlier versions of SmartCapture and other applications e.g. IPLab may have installed a file called ' IPLab INIT' or 'Eve Init'. Under normal circumstances the installer will install the right software for your machine. However if an iMate is being used or other software has been installed then it may be necessary to check that the correct software is placed into the extensions folder according to the table below:

If you are using the iMate ADB to USB converter, you will need to ensure that the iMate 'init' is installed in the "Extensions" folder. Use the latest version of the iMate installer to correct this problem. Don't forget to reboot your Mac after installation.

Note also that if you plug in an the ADB dongle it will not be seen until your Mac is rebooted.
